- “Tell Khalid not to kill a woman or a hired servant.”
Abu Dawud (1/416) narrated it through the route of Umar ibn al-Muraqqa ibn Sayfi, who said: My father narrated to me from his grandfather Ribah ibn Rabi, who said: “We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a military expedition when he saw some people gathered around something. He sent a man and said: ‘Go and see what these people have gathered around.’ He came back and said: ‘A woman has been killed.’ He said: ‘She was not one who would fight!’ Khalid ibn al-Walid was commanding the vanguard, so he sent a man and said...” He then mentioned it.
This is an authentic chain of transmission; all its narrators are trustworthy. Abu al-Zinad narrated it from al-Muraqqa in a more complete form, with the following wording: “Catch up with Khalid and tell him: Do not kill children or a hired servant.”
Al-Tahawi (2/127), al-Hakim (2/122), and Ahmad (3/488) narrated it from Abu al-Zinad, who said: Al-Muraqqa ibn Sayfi informed me from his grandfather Riyah ibn al-Rabi, the brother of Hanzalah the Scribe, that he told him that he went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on an expedition in which Khalid ibn al-Walid commanded the vanguard. Ribah and the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by a slain woman, one of those struck by the vanguard. They stopped to look at her and marvel at her appearance, until the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, caught up with them on his mount. They moved aside from her, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stopped by her and said: ‘She was not one who would fight.’ He then said to one of them...” He then mentioned it.
Ibn Majah (2/195) also narrated it through this route. Al-Hakim said: “Authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs.” Al-Dhahabi agreed with him.
I say: No; rather, it is authentic only. Al-Muraqqa ibn Sayfi was not narrated from by either of the two Shaykhs, though he is trustworthy.
