as stated in al-Taqrīb. As for his father, Ḥakīm ibn Muʿāwiyah ibn Ḥaydah, a number of trustworthy narrators reported from him, and Ibn Ḥibbān declared him trustworthy (1/24).
688 — “Are you afraid of poverty? By Him in whose hand is my soul, worldly prosperity will surely be poured upon you in abundance, until it alone leads your hearts astray. By Allah, I have left you upon something like a clear white path, whose night and day are alike.”
Recorded by Ibn Mājah (no. 5): Hishām ibn ʿAmmār al-Dimashqī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā ibn Sumayyiʿ narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Sulaymān al-Afṭas narrated to us, from al-Walīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Jurashī, from Jubayr ibn Nufayr, from Abū al-Dardāʾ, who said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came out to us while we were discussing poverty and fearing it. He said...” He then mentioned it.
Abū al-Dardāʾ said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, spoke the truth—by Allah. He left us—by Allah—upon something like a clear white path, whose night and day are alike.”
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. All its narrators are trustworthy. There is some criticism concerning Hishām ibn ʿAmmār and Ibrāhīm al-Afṭas, but it does not lower the hadith below the level we have stated. Al-Būṣīrī left it unassessed in Zawāʾid Ibn Mājah (1/2).
