Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Nawfal, who heard Durrah bint Muʿādh relate from Umm Hāniʾ that she asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: “Will we visit one another when we die and see one another?” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, replied …” and he then cited it.
I say: This is a weak chain of transmission because of Ibn Lahīʿah, who had poor retention. Thus, al-Suyūṭī’s statement, “Aḥmad and al-Ṭabarānī narrated it in al-Kabīr with a good chain,” is not sound—unless he meant that it is good due to corroborating evidence; in that case, yes. Regarding Durrah bint Muʿādh, al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Taʿjīl: “I say: She is counted among the Companions. Ibn al-Munkadir and Zayd ibn Aslam also narrated from her.”
I say: Yet despite this, he did not include her in al-Iṣābah! Nor did Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr mention her in al-Istīʿāb. And Allah knows best. The hadith has a strong supporting narration from Kaʿb ibn Mālik, attributed to the Prophet, with similar wording. Mālik and others narrated it with an authentic chain of transmission, and it will come under no. 995.
- “The disease of the nations will afflict my ummah.” They asked, “Messenger of Allah, what is the disease of the nations?” He said: “Exultant arrogance, boastful ingratitude, rivalry for worldly gain, mutual hatred, and envy, until oppression arises.”
Al-Ḥākim narrated it (4/168) through Abū Hāniʾ, Ḥumayd ibn Hāniʾ al-Khawlānī, who said: Abū Saʿīd al-Ghifārī told me that he said: I heard Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, say: I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say it. He then cited it.
