677 — “If a habitual drinker of wine dies, he will meet Allah like an idol worshipper.”
Aḥmad narrated it (1/272): Aswad ibn ʿĀmir narrated to us; al-Ḥasan—that is, Ibn Ṣāliḥ—narrated to us from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, who said: I was informed that Ibn ʿAbbās said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said it. ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd also narrated it in al-Muntakhab (80/1), and al-Khalʿī in al-Fawāʾid (105/1), through al-Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ, with the same chain.
I say: This is a chain whose narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators of Muslim, apart from Ibn al-Munkadir’s shaykh, who is unknown and unnamed. He has, however, been named in some routes. Thus, Ibn Ḥibbān narrated it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (1379), as did al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī from him in al-Aḥādīth al-Mukhtārah (154/1), and Ibn ʿAdī in al-Kāmil (220/1), through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khirāsh: al-ʿAwwām ibn Ḥawshab narrated to us from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, with a similar wording. Ibn ʿAdī said: “ʿAbd Allāh ibn Khirāsh is rejected in hadith.”
I say: He was not alone in narrating it, for Isrāʾīl also narrated it: Ḥakīm ibn Jubayr informed us from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, with the same report. Ibn Abī Ḥātim (2/26) and al-Silafī in al-Ṭuyūriyyāt (198/1) narrated it, as did Abū Nuʿaym in al-Ḥilyah (9/253), through various routes from Isrāʾīl, with the same chain.
Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: “Aḥmad ibn Yūnus narrated it, saying: from Isrāʾīl, from Thuwayr, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. My father said: ‘In my view, Ḥakīm’s hadith is more authentic.’ I asked my father: ‘Which do you prefer: Ḥakīm ibn Jubayr or Thuwayr?’ He replied: ‘Both are weak and extreme in Shiʿism.’ I asked: ‘Then which of them do you prefer?’ He said: ‘They are comparable.’”
Al-Ṭabarānī also narrated it in al-Kabīr (3/161/2), and Ibn Bishrān in al-Amālī (25/87/2), through Thuwayr ibn Abī Fākhtah, with the same report.
