675 — “No one who is undutiful to his parents, addicted to wine, or denies the divine decree will enter Paradise.”
Aḥmad narrated it (6/441), and Ibn ʿAsākir narrated it from him in The History of Damascus (16/32/2): Abū Jaʿfar al-Suwaydī narrated to us; he said: Abū al-Rabīʿ—Sulaymān ibn ʿUtbah al-Dimashqī—narrated to us; he said: I heard Yūnus ibn Maysarah narrate from Abū Idrīs ʿĀʾidh Allāh, from Abū al-Dardāʾ, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said—and he then cited it.
Ibn Mājah (3376) also narrated its middle clause through another chain from Sulaymān ibn ʿUtbah, with this same chain. Al-Būṣīrī said in al-Zawāʾid: “Its chain of transmission is good. There is disagreement concerning Sulaymān ibn ʿUtbah, while the rest of the chain’s narrators are trustworthy.”
I say: It is as he said.
676 — “One stroke with a whip is enough for a snake, whether you hit it or miss it.”
Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Aṣamm narrated it in his Hadith Collection (no. 150—my copy), and al-Dāraquṭnī in al-Afrād (vol. 3, no. 48, my copy), through Ismāʿīl ibn Maslamah ibn Qaʿnab, who said: Ḥumayd ibn al-Aswad narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he then cited it.
He said: “It is a singular hadith from Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah. Abū al-Aswad Ḥumayd ibn al-Aswad alone narrated it from him, and we know of no one other than Ismāʿīl ibn Maslamah ibn Qaʿnab who narrated it from him.”
