through several routes from Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said it. In one narration, al-Bayhaqī added: “Sufyān said: That is, when he acts as his parents did.”
Al-Ḥākim said: “Authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.” Al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and it is as they said.
ʿUmar ibn Abī Salamah also narrated it in corroboration, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah. Al-Ḥākim transmitted it, and al-Bayhaqī transmitted it from him.
I say: Its chain is good for corroborative reports and supporting evidence.
Sufyān’s aforementioned explanation has also been narrated in a raised report from the hadiths of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbās and ʿĀʾishah.
As for the hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās, Ibn Abī Laylā narrated it from Dāwūd ibn ʿAlī, from his father, from him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The child born of fornication is the worst of the three, when he acts as his parents did.”
Ibn ʿAdī transmitted it (127/2), as did al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (3/92/2) and al-Muʿjam al-Awsaṭ (1/183/2). He said: “No one narrated it from Dāwūd except Ibn Abī Laylā.”
I say: His name was Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, and he is weak due to his poor retention.
