670 — “He would take a tuft of hair from the side of a camel among the booty and say: ‘I have no more share in it than any one of you. Beware of misappropriating booty, for misappropriating booty will be a disgrace for its perpetrator on the Day of Resurrection. Hand over even a thread and a needle, and whatever is more than that. Fight in the path of Allah, whether near or far, whether settled or travelling, for jihad is one of the gates of Paradise; through it Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, delivers from worry and grief. Establish the limits set by Allah among those near and those far, and do not let the reproach of any reproacher deter you in Allah’s cause.’”
ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad transmitted it (4/330), saying: ʿAbd Allah ibn Sālim al-Kūfī al-Mufallaj—who was trustworthy—narrated to us; ʿUbaydah ibn al-Aswad narrated to us, from al-Qāsim ibn al-Walīd, from Abū Ṣādiq, from Rabīʿah ibn Nājid, from ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit, in a report attributed to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. This is a chain of transmission whose narrators are trustworthy, apart from Rabīʿah ibn Nājid. Al-Khulāṣah states: “Abū Ṣādiq al-Azdī alone narrated from him.” Yet it does not mention any narrator criticism or accreditation regarding him. Al-Dhahabī said in al-Mīzān: “He is scarcely known.” As for al-Ḥāfiẓ, he said in al-Taqrīb: “He is trustworthy.” I do not know the basis on which he made that judgment, and I can only regard it as an error on his part—may Allah Most High have mercy on him.
Ibn Mājah also transmitted part of this hadith (2/111–112), namely his words, “Establish the limits set by Allah,” and what follows, through the chain of transmission of ʿAbd Allah ibn Aḥmad. In al-Zawāʾid, he said:
