Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted it in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (1/13/1), and al-Diyā al-Maqdisī transmitted it from him in al-Mukhtārah (1/285). Its chain of transmission is weak, as I have explained in the other book (1537).
Yet it has a supporting narration with the wording: “The people embraced Islam, while ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ had faith”; and another with the wording: “The two sons of al-ʿĀṣ, Hishām and ʿAmr, are believers.” Both have preceded under (155, 156).
654 — “No one is better in the sight of Allah than a believer who lives long in Islam, because of his glorification, magnification, and declaration of Allah’s oneness.”
Aḥmad (1/163) transmitted it, as did al-Diyā in al-Mukhtārah (1/283), through Ṭalḥah ibn Yaḥyā ibn Ṭalḥah, from Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥah, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shaddād:
“Three men of Banū ʿUdhrah came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and embraced Islam. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: ‘Who will take care of them for me?’ Ṭalḥah said: ‘I will.’ So they stayed with Ṭalḥah. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then dispatched a military expedition, and one of them went out with it and was martyred. He then dispatched another expedition, and another of them went out with it and was martyred. The third then died in his bed.
Ṭalḥah said: ‘I saw these three who had stayed with me in Paradise. I saw the one who had died in his bed ahead of them; I saw the one who was martyred last following him; and I saw the one who was martyred first as the last of them. This perplexed me, so I came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and mentioned this to him.’ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: ‘What was it about that which you found objectionable? No one ...’—to the end of the hadith.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission, and it is authentic according to Muslim’s criteria. There has been criticism of Ṭalḥah ibn Yaḥyā regarding his memory, but his hadith does not fall below the rank of good, if Allah Most High wills. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shaddād was a senior Successor, born during the Prophet’s lifetime; it may therefore be said that this is mursal, with the Companion link omitted.
I say instead that it appears to be a musnad report, with a continuous chain to the Prophet, which he received from Ṭalḥah himself, as indicated by his statement in the course of the hadith: “Ṭalḥah said.” And Allah knows best.
