I have found a corroborating report for the latter part of the hadith, in the hadith of ʿAmr ibn Taghlib: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “... Among the signs of the Hour are that merchants will become numerous and writing will become widespread.”
It was recorded by al-Ṭayālisī in his Musnad (1171): Ibn Faḍālah narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan, who said: ʿAmr ibn Taghlib said it. Ibn Mandah also recorded it in al-Maʿrifah (2/59/2) through the route of al-Ṭayālisī.
I say: Ibn Faḍālah—whose name was Mubārak—was truthful, but practised tadlīs, obscuring his immediate source. The same is true of al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī. However, the latter explicitly stated his direct transmission from ʿAmr in Musnad Aḥmad (5/69), which also includes the first part of the hadith.
648 — “Among the signs of the Hour is that greetings will be restricted to acquaintances.” In another version: “A man will greet another man only because he knows him.”
It was recorded by Aḥmad (1/387) and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (3/36/2), through the route of Mujālid, from ʿĀmir, from al-Aswad ibn Yazīd, who said:
