“Whoever recites ten verses in a night will not be recorded among the heedless, and whoever recites one hundred verses will be recorded among the devoutly obedient.” Al-Ḥākim recorded it (1/555–556) as corroborating evidence, and al-Dhahabī said: “I say: Its chain is feeble.”
I say: This ʿAbd Allāh appears to be Ibn Samʿān al-Makhzūmī al-Madanī, who was accused of fabrication. However, its meaning is found in other hadiths: its first part has been established in the hadith of Ibn ʿAmr, as mentioned above; and wording similar to its second part has been established in the hadith of Tamīm al-Dārī that follows. Indeed, this has also been authenticated through another route from Abū Ḥamzah, as will appear under no. 757.
644 — “Whoever recites one hundred verses in a night will have a night of devout obedience recorded for him.”
Al-Dārimī recorded it (2/464): Yaḥyā ibn Basṭām narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Ḥamzah narrated to us; Zayd ibn Wāqid narrated to me, from Sulaymān ibn Mūsā, from Kathīr ibn Murrah, from Tamīm al-Dārī, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said this.
I say: This is a good chain. Its narrators are known and trustworthy, apart from Yaḥyā ibn Basṭām. Ibn Abī Ḥātim said (4/2/132): “I asked my father about him, and he replied: ‘A shaykh who is truthful; there is nothing objectionable in his hadiths. He was a Qadarī, denying divine decree. Al-Bukhārī included him in the Book of Weak Narrators, where his entry may be found.’” Then I found it in the Musnad (4/103), through al-Haytham ibn Ḥumayd, from Zayd ibn Wāqid, with the same chain. Thus, the hadith is authentic, and all praise is due to Allah.
645 — “Recite the Muʿawwidhāt (the protective surahs) at the conclusion of every prayer.”
Al-Nasāʾī recorded it (1/196), as did Ibn Khuzaymah in his Ṣaḥīḥ (755), from Layth, from Ḥunayn ibn Abī Ḥakīm, from ʿAlī ibn
