“His weakness is plainly very severe.”
It has another corroborating report, from the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar, attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “Be lenient in punishing people of good standing.” Ibn al-Aʿrābī transmitted it in his Muʿjam (fol. 33/1): Tamtām—Muḥammad ibn Ghālib—informed us; ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn al-Nuʿmān informed us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Salamah informed us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār, from him. Al-Sahmī also transmitted it in Tārīkh Jurjān (122) through this route.
I say: This is a good chain of transmission. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz—who is al-Mājishūn—and Ibn Dīnār are both trustworthy narrators used by the two Shaykhs. Regarding ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn al-Nuʿmān, al-Dhahabī said: “Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn and others declared him trustworthy, while al-Dāraquṭnī and al-Nasāʾī said: He is not strong.” Ibn Ḥibbān and al-ʿIjlī likewise declared him trustworthy, as stated in al-Lisān. Thus, at the very least, his hadith is good.
Tamtām is trustworthy and reliable, as al-Dāraquṭnī said. Thus, this chain of transmission is established. Praise be to Allah.
Al-Ṭaḥāwī narrated (3/130) from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Refrain from punishing people of honorable character, who are people of righteousness.” However, concerning this Muḥammad, al-Dhahabī said in al-Ḍuʿafāʾ: “They declared him weak.”
The first part of it has a corroborating report from the hadith of Zayd ibn Thābit, attributed to the Prophet, with the addition: “Except in a fixed legal penalty among the prescribed penalties of Allah Most High.” But its chain of transmission is very weak, as I explained in Tartīb al-Muʿjam al-Ṣaghīr, no. 314. In al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr and al-Fatḥ al-Kabīr, it is denoted by the abbreviation (ṬS), meaning al-Ṭabarānī in
