Among them was Abū Hurayrah, who reported from him—peace and blessings be upon him—that he said the same. Abū Nuʿaym recorded it in al-Ḥilyah (5/202), from Isḥāq ibn Rāhawayh, who said: Kulthūm ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī Sadrah narrated to us; ʿAṭāʾ ibn Maysarah narrated to us, from him.
I say: This is a weak, interrupted chain of transmission. ʿAṭāʾ ibn Maysarah was Ibn Abī Muslim al-Khurāsānī, and he did not hear from any of the Companions. Regarding this Kulthūm, Abū Ḥātim said: “They have spoken critically of him.”
Among them was also a man from Banū Sulayṭ, who said: “I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him ...” He then mentioned a hadith containing this wording. It is narrated by ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from al-Ḥasan, who said: A man from Banū Sulayṭ narrated to me. Aḥmad recorded it (5/71).
This chain is acceptable as corroborative evidence. Al-Haythamī graded it good (10/275). Its narrators are trustworthy, apart from ʿAlī ibn Zayd—namely, Ibn Judʿān—who had weak retention.
In sum, the hadith is authentic when all these chains are considered together. Success is granted by Allah.
638 — “Pardon the slips of people of good standing, except in cases involving prescribed penalties.”
It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (4375), al-Ṭaḥāwī in Mushkil al-Āthār (3/129), Aḥmad (6/181), Abū Nuʿaym in al-Ḥilyah (9/43), Ibn ʿAdī in al-Kāmil (306/1), al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn al-Muẓaffar in al-Fawāʾid al-Muntaqāh (2/214/2), al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī in al-Muntaqā min Masmūʿātihi bi-Marw (folio 48/1), and likewise al-Bayhaqī (8/334), through various routes from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Zayd, from Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr, from his father, from ʿAmrah, from ʿĀʾishah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said this.
