through the chain of Abū Wāʾil, from Abū Nukhaylah al-Bajalī, who said: Jarīr said: “I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was receiving pledges of allegiance, and I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, extend your hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you, and stipulate a condition for me, for you know best.’ He said: ‘…’” and then cited it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission. Abū Nukhaylah is spelled with a dotted khāʾ, though it has also been said to be with an undotted ḥāʾ; Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī definitively held the latter and said: “He was a righteous man.” More than one scholar definitively affirmed that he was a Companion, as al-Ḥāfiẓ explained in al-Iṣābah. This hadith also has a supporting report from a Bedouin, which will appear with the wording: “If you bear witness …”
Al-Ṭabarānī also narrated the hadith in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (vol. 1, folio 111a) through the chain of Abū Wāʾil with the same wording. Its final statement has also been narrated through another route from Jarīr with the wording: “I disavow every Muslim who resides among the polytheists.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, why?” He said: “Their fires should not be visible to one another.”
Al-Tirmidhī narrated it (2/397): Hannād narrated to us: Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, from Jarīr ibn ʿAbd Allāh: The Messenger of Allah sent a detachment to Khathʿam. Some people sought protection by prostrating, but they were quickly killed. When this reached the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, he ordered that they be paid half the blood-money, and said: “…” and then cited it.
Then al-Tirmidhī said: Hannād narrated to us: ʿAbdah narrated to us, from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from Qays ibn
