- “Three things are not to be refused: cushions, perfume, and milk.”
Al-Tirmidhī (2/130) narrated it, as did al-Baghawī in Sharḥ al-Sunnah (3/112/2), Abū al-Shaykh in Ṭabaqāt al-Muḥaddithīn (p. 185), Bishr ibn Maṭar in his Ḥadīth (3/89/1), Ibn Ḥibbān in al-Thiqāt (1/10), al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr (3/196/1), and Abū Nuʿaym in Akhbār Iṣfahān (1/99), through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muslim, from his father, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said this.
Al-Tirmidhī said: “A singular hadith. ʿAbd Allāh is Ibn Muslim ibn Jundab, and he was a Medinan.”
I say: It seems that al-Tirmidhī was unaware of his standing and therefore regarded his hadith as singular. Others, however, knew him. Ibn Abī Ḥātim said in his book (2/2/165): “Abū Zurʿah was asked about him, and he said: ‘He is a Medinan; there is no harm in him.’” Al-Ḥāfiẓ likewise said so in al-Taqrīb. Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in al-Thiqāt (2/159), and al-ʿIjlī said: “A trustworthy Medinan.” Al-Dhahabī said: “He narrated few reports, and I know of no criticism of him.”
As for his father, he was better known than he was. Ibn Ḥibbān said in al-Thiqāt (1/213): “He narrated from Ibn ʿUmar and served as the judge of Medina. Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Anṣārī and … and … narrated from him. He died in the year 106 AH.” Al-ʿIjlī said:
