Silsilat al-Ahadith al-SahihahNasir al-Din al-Albani

Shuraḥbīl ibn Saʿd, as Abū Dāwūd and Abū Ḥātim stated definitively; this is also al-Bukhārī’s narration. This is further supported by the fact that Zayd ibn Abī Unaysah likewise narrated it from Shuraḥbīl al-Anṣārī, from Jābir, with the same wording. Ibn Ḥibbān (2073) and al-Quḍāʿī in Musnad al-Shihāb (fol. 41/2) narrated it.

Since the chain of transmission revolves around Shuraḥbīl ibn Saʿd, it is a weak chain, for there is near-unanimity in declaring this Shuraḥbīl weak. No one declared him trustworthy apart from Ibn Ḥibbān and his teacher Ibn Khuzaymah, who therefore included his reports in their respective Ṣaḥīḥ collections. This was due to the leniency for which they are known. The hadith does, however, have another route from Jābir that lends it strength. Ibn ʿAdī narrated it in al-Kāmil (fol. 20/2) through Ayyūb ibn Suwayd, from al-Awzāʿī, from Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jābir, attributing it to the Prophet.

I say: This Ayyūb is truthful but makes mistakes, as stated in al-Taqrīb; thus, it is a sound corroborating report. The hadith has also been authentically reported through another route, in an abridged wording: “Whoever receives a favor and mentions it has shown gratitude for it, and whoever conceals it has shown ingratitude for it.”

  1. “Whoever receives a favor and mentions it has shown gratitude for it, and whoever conceals it has shown ingratitude for it.”

Abū Dāwūd (4814) and Abū Nuʿaym in Akhbār Iṣfahān (1/259) narrated it through Jarīr, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Sufyān, from Jābir, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.

I say: This is an authentic chain according to Muslim’s criteria. It also has a corroborating report from Ibn ʿUmar, attributed to the Prophet, with similar wording. Ibn ʿAsākir narrated it (16/302/1), but it contains ʿUthmān ibn Fāʾid, who is weak. There is also a blank space in the manuscript, so its chain could not be fully determined.
