I say: Its narrators are trustworthy—narrators used by al-Bukhārī—apart from this Zayd. Al-Dhahabī mentioned him in al-Mīzān and said: “From Abū Isḥāq, [he narrated] a false report, the text of which is: ‘Whoever brings joy to a believer will not be touched by the Fire.’” Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in al-Lisān: “The author cited, in his Muʿjam, another route from Abū Ḥāmid, from him, and said: ‘This is a rejected report, though its narrators are eminent and trustworthy authorities. Thus, the defect lies with this Zayd; yet I have not found anyone who declared him either unreliable or trustworthy.’”
- From ʿUbādah: Ibn Abī al-Dunyā narrated it by way of Abū Sinān, from Yaʿlā ibn Shaddād ibn Aws, from him: “The Anṣār collected some money and brought it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: ‘O Messenger of Allah, rebuild this mosque and adorn it. How long will you pray beneath these palm branches?’ He replied: ‘I have no wish to depart from the way of my brother Moses: a shelter like Moses’s shelter.’”
This hadith is singular through this route. This is what al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr stated in al-Bidāyah (3/215). This Abū Sinān was ʿĪsā ibn Sinān al-Ḥanafī, and he is weak in hadith, as stated in al-Taqrīb.
In conclusion, the hadith rises to the rank of good, Allah willing, through the combined strength of the two authentic mursal reports and this connected narration. I then found another mursal supporting report for it, narrated by Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād in Zawāʾid Zuhd Ibn al-Mubārak (no. 198). He said: Ibn ʿUyaynah informed us, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from Abū Jaʿfar, who said: They said: “O Messenger of Allah, demolish it”—meaning the mosque; that is, plaster it with mud. He said:
