616 — “Build it as a shelter like Moses’s shelter”—that is, the Mosque of Madinah.

It was narrated as a mursal report from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, Sālim ibn ʿAṭiyyah, al-Zuhrī, and Rāshid ibn Saʿd; and with a connected chain from Abū al-Dardāʾ and ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit.

1. From al-Ḥasan: Ibn Abī al-Dunyā recorded it in Qaṣr al-Amal (“Shortness of Hope”) (3/25/2), through Ismāʿīl ibn Muslim, from him. He said: “When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, built the mosque, his Companions assisted him in its construction, while he himself carried the bricks, until his chest was covered in dust; then he said …” He then cited it. Ibn Kathīr said in al-Bidāyah (3/215): “This is mursal.”

I say: All of its narrators are trustworthy, if this Ismāʿīl is al-ʿAbdī, the judge. But if he is the Meccan-Basran, then he is weak. Both of them narrated from al-Ḥasan. It is, however, corroborated: Ibn Abī Shaybah recorded it in al-Muṣannaf (1/100/2), and Ibn ʿAsākir narrated it from him (12/317/2), through Ayyūb, from al-Ḥasan, with the same wording. Its chain is authentic as a mursal report.

2. From Sālim ibn ʿAṭiyyah: al-Bayhaqī recorded it in his Sunan (2/439), through Layth, from him. Layth is Ibn Abī Sulaym, who is weak, and I have found no biographical notice for his shaykh, Sālim.
