- “Women are not required to shave their heads; rather, they are required only to trim their hair.”
Abū Zurʿah recorded it in Tārīkh Dimashq (folio 88/1): Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn told me: Hishām ibn Yūsuf narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Jubayr ibn Shaybah, who said that Ṣafiyyah bint Shaybah informed him. She said: Umm ʿUthmān bint Abū Sufyān informed me, from Ibn ʿAbbās, attributing it to the Prophet, with this wording. He said: “No one transmitted this hadith with a chain of transmission except Hishām ibn Yūsuf, and no one narrated it from him except Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn.”
That is what he said, based on the extent of his knowledge. Otherwise, Ibn Maʿīn was corroborated, for Abū Dāwūd states in his Sunan (1985): Abū Yaʿqūb al-Baghdādī—a trustworthy narrator—narrated to us: Hishām ibn Yūsuf narrated to us with it. This Abū Yaʿqūb was Isḥāq ibn Abū Isrāʾīl, Ibrāhīm ibn Kāmijrā al-Marwazī. He is trustworthy, as Abū Dāwūd and others said. Some criticized him for suspending judgement on the question of the Quran, but this does not impair his narrations, as has been established in hadith methodology—contrary to what al-Zaylaʿī related from Ibn al-Qaṭṭān concerning him—particularly since Ibn Maʿīn corroborated him, as you have seen.
Through this route, al-Mukhalliṣ also recorded it in A Selected Extract from the Fourth Part of His Hadiths (88/1): ʿAbd Allāh—that is, al-Baghawī—narrated to us: Isḥāq ibn Abū Isrāʾīl narrated to us: Hishām ibn Yūsuf narrated to me with it, except that he said: Ibn Jurayj said, “ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Jubayr informed me,” with it. Thus, Ibn Jurayj explicitly stated that he had heard it directly from him. This is an important point. It is also corroborated, as will follow.
Al-Dāraquṭnī likewise recorded it in his Sunan (p. 277), with al-Mukhalliṣ’s chain of transmission and wording. Al-Dārimī also recorded it in his Sunan, saying (2/64): ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Madīnī informed us: Hishām ibn Yūsuf narrated to us—with Ibn Jurayj explicitly stating direct transmission therein.
