- “Bring out the adolescent girls and the women in seclusion, so that they may attend the Eid and the supplication of the Muslims; and let menstruating women keep away from the Muslims’ prayer-place.”
Al-Humaydī recorded it in his Musnad, no. 362: Sufyān narrated to us, saying: Ayyūb narrated to us from Ḥafṣah, who said: We asked Umm ʿAṭiyyah, “Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?” She replied, “Yes—may my father be sacrificed for him.” Whenever she narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), she would say, “May my father be sacrificed for him. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say,” and then she cited it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission meeting the criteria of the two Shaykhs. Both of them recorded it with similar wording, adding in one of their versions: “I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what if one of us does not have an outer garment?’ He said, ‘Let her sister lend her one of her outer garments.’” This is also found in al-Humaydī, no. 361. Muslim added in another version: “Menstruating women go out among you, remaining behind the people and declaring Allah’s greatness with them.” Al-Bukhārī added in one version: “So I asked her, ‘Even menstruating women?’ She replied, ‘Yes. Does not a menstruating woman attend ʿArafāt, and attend this and that?’”
