Ahmad likewise recorded it (3/46) through the route of al-Mustamir ibn al-Rayyan al-Iyadi: Abu Nadrah al-Abdi narrated to us from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, with the same wording, except that he added at its beginning: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, mentioned the worldly life and said: ‘Indeed, this world is green and sweet, so beware of it and beware of women.’ Then he mentioned three women among the Children of Israel…” The hadith is similar in wording. Its chain of transmission is also authentic.
- “Every community has a trial, and the trial of my community is wealth.”
It was recorded by al-Tirmidhi (2/54), al-Bukhari in al-Tarikh al-Kabir (4/1/222), Ibn Hibban (2470), al-Hakim (4/318), Ahmad (4/160), and al-Quda‘i in Musnad al-Shihab (fol. 86/1), through several routes from al-Layth ibn Sa‘d, from Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih, who reported that ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr related to him from his father, from Ka‘b ibn ‘Iyad, who said: I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say it. Al-Tirmidhi said: “A good, authentic, singular hadith.” Al-Hakim said: “Its chain of transmission is authentic,” and al-Dhahabi agreed with him.
I say: It is as they said; indeed, in my view, it meets Muslim’s criteria. It has been criticized on grounds that do not detract from it, as will be mentioned. It has also been narrated from Abu Hurayrah. Al-‘Uqayli recorded it in al-Du‘afa’ (299), from ‘Ali ibn Qutaybah: Malik narrated to us from Musa al-Ahmar, from him, in a report attributed to the Prophet, with the same wording. He said: “It has no basis from Malik, nor is it established through any route. ‘Ali ibn Qutaybah al-Rifa‘i, a Basran, is weak in hadith; he narrates from trustworthy reporters fabrications and reports that have no basis.”
