“And the hadith has mursal corroborating reports!” He then cited two reports attributed to Successors! Thus, he overlooked these many connected corroborating reports. And Allah is the Granter of success.
587 - “The earlier Scripture was sent down through one gate, in one mode; whereas the Quran was sent down through seven gates, in seven modes: admonition, command, lawful and forbidden matters, clear verses, ambiguous verses, and parables. So treat as lawful what it declares lawful, deem forbidden what it declares forbidden, do what you have been commanded to do, refrain from what you have been forbidden, take admonition from its parables, act upon its clear verses, and believe in its ambiguous verses, saying: ‘We believe in it; all of it is from our Lord.’”
It was recorded by al-Tahawi in Mushkil al-Athar (4/184–185), al-Hakim (1/553), Ibn Hibban (1782), and al-Harawi in Dhamm al-Kalam (folio 62/2), through several routes from Haywah ibn Shurayh, from Uqayl ibn Khalid, from Salamah ibn Abi Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman, from his father, from Ibn Masud, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, who said this hadith.
I say: Al-Hakim declared this chain “authentic,” and al-Dhahabi agreed with him. Its narrators are trustworthy and are among the narrators relied upon by the two Shaykhs, apart from this Salamah. Ibn Abi Hatim included him in his biographical work and related from his father that he said: “There is no harm in him.” Al-Tahawi, however, declared it defective because of a break in its chain. He cited it immediately afterwards through the route of Abdullah ibn Salih, who said: Layth ibn Sad related to me; Uqayl ibn Khalid related to me, from Ibn Shihab, who said: Salamah ibn Abi Salamah informed me—from his father—that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him—then he mentioned this hadith, without mentioning Abdullah ibn Masud. Al-Tahawi then said: “Haywah and Layth differed in their transmission from Uqayl concerning its chain. Each of them reported it from him in the manner we have described, and the scholars of chains of transmission rejected this chain because of the break within it,”
