his inclusion of Marthad’s hadith in his Ṣaḥīḥ. Yet Marthad does not merit this, and the most that can be said is that the hadith is good by virtue of corroboration, for another route with similar wording will come three hadiths later.
573 — “Every Muslim owes charity.” It was asked, “What if he finds nothing?” He said, “Let him work with his hands, benefit himself, and give charity.” It was asked, “What if he is unable to do so?” He said, “Let him assist one in desperate need.” It was asked, “What if he is unable to do so?” He said, “Let him enjoin what is right, or what is good.” It was asked, “What if he does not do that?” He said, “Let him refrain from evil, for that is charity.”

Its narrators are those of the Six Books, apart from Hawdhah, who is Ibn Khalīfah and is trustworthy. It is an abridgment of: “Charity is due for every joint of every person,” which will come later.
575 — “Every person must give charity on his own behalf each day on which the sun rises.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, how can I give charity when we have no wealth?” He said, “Among the avenues of charity are declaring Allah’s greatness, glorifying Allah, praising Allah, declaring that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and seeking Allah’s forgiveness; enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong; removing a thorn, bone, or stone from people’s path; guiding a blind person; and communicating with a deaf and mute person until he understands
