it is beyond question that ʿUthmān, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf, and other wealthy Companions did not spend all their wealth. Rather, they died leaving immense fortunes to their heirs, as is mentioned in the books of biography and biographical notices.
In short, with this corroborating report, the hadith is good—or authentic. And Allah knows best.
Mālik (1/256/1) narrated from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār, who said: “I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar being asked, ‘What is hoarded wealth?’ He replied, ‘It is wealth from which zakah is not paid.’” Its chain of transmission is fully authentic.
- “The worst qualities a man can have are a panic-stricken avarice and a crippling cowardice.”
It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (3511), Ibn Ḥibbān (808), and Aḥmad (2/302/320); and through him, by Abū Nuʿaym in al-Ḥilyah (9/50), by way of Mūsā ibn ʿAlī, who said: I heard my father narrate from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam, who said: I heard Abū Hurayrah say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said—and he cited it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission. Its narrators are trustworthy and are narrators of Muslim, apart from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam—the father of ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz—who is trustworthy.
- “On that Day, the people will be on the bridge over Hell.”
Aḥmad (6/116–117) recorded it by way of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAnbasah ibn Saʿīd, from Ḥabīb ibn Abī ʿAmrah, from Mujāhid, who said: Ibn ʿAbbās said: “Do you know how vast Hell is?” I said, “No.” He said, “Indeed, by Allah, you do not know. Between the earlobe and shoulder of one of them is a journey of seventy autumns, in which valleys of pus and blood flow.” I said, “Rivers?” He said, “No, rather valleys.” Then he said, “Do you know how vast Hell is?” I said, “No.” He said, “Indeed, by Allah, you do not”
