Abu Hani al-Khawlani informed me, from ʿAmr ibn Malik al-Janbi, who said: Fudalah ibn ʿUbayd told me that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said during the Farewell Pilgrimage”—and he then narrated it.
I say: This is an authentic chain of transmission; all its narrators are trustworthy. Ahmad also narrated it (6/22) through Rushdayn ibn Saʿd, from Humayd Abu Hani al-Khawlani, with the same chain. Ibn Majah (3934) narrated the first and last statements through ʿAbdullah ibn Wahb, from Abu Hani, with the same chain. Ibn Hibban (25) also narrated it through another route from al-Layth ibn Saʿd, with the same chain; and al-Hakim narrated it (1/10–11) through two further routes from al-Layth, with the same chain.
They also narrated a corroborating report, with similar wording, from Anas in a hadith attributed to the Prophet, except that it does not mention the third statement. In the first statement, it says: “By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, no servant whose neighbour is not safe from his harm will enter Paradise.” Ibn Hibban (26) and al-Hakim (1/11) narrated it through Hammad ibn Salamah, from Yunus ibn ʿUbayd and Humayd, from Anas ibn Malik, who said that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said”—and he then narrated it.
Al-Hakim said: “It meets Muslim’s conditions.” Al-Dhahabi endorsed him, and it is as they both said. Muslim also narrated it in his Sahih (1/49), from Abu Hurayrah in a hadith attributed to the Prophet, with the same wording but without the phrase, “By Him in Whose Hand is my soul”; for this reason, I included it. Al-Bukhari cited it in suspended form (4/118) from him, but did not give its wording. He narrated it with a connected chain from Abu Shurayh, in a hadith attributed to the Prophet, with the wording: “By Allah, he does not believe; by Allah, he does not believe; by Allah, he does not believe.” It was said: “Who, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied: “The one whose neighbour is not safe from his harm.”
