Abu Dawud (2/304) and al-Tabarani in al-Saghir (p. 37) also recorded it through two other chains from Ibn al-Had, with the same wording. This is an authentic chain of transmission: its narrators are trustworthy and are narrators of the two Shaykhs, apart from Abd al-Wahhab, who was Ibn Abi Bakr Rafiʿ al-Madani, al-Zuhri’s agent. Abu Hatim said: “He is trustworthy, and his hadith is sound. There is no objection to him; he was among al-Zuhri’s early companions.” Al-Nasa’i said: “Trustworthy.”
He was corroborated, for Ahmad said: Yaʿqub narrated to us; he said: My father narrated to us, from Salih ibn Kaysan, who said: Muhammad ibn Muslim ibn ʿUbayd Allah ibn Shihab narrated to us with the wording that she heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say:
“He who reconciles people and conveys good, or speaks good, is not a liar.” She said: “I did not hear him permit anything of what people say except in three cases...”
He then cited it according to the second version. Muslim (8/28) likewise recorded it from Yaʿqub ibn Ibrahim ibn Saʿd, with the same wording. Al-Bukhari also recorded it (5/328–329, Fath) through ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn ʿAbd Allah: Ibrahim ibn Saʿd narrated to us with the same wording, but without her statement, “I did not hear him ...”
Muslim also recorded it in full through Yunus, from Ibn Shihab, except that he attributed this additional statement—which was from her words—to Ibn Shihab, saying: “Ibn Shihab said: ‘And I did not hear him permit anything ...’” According to this version, the addition is not attributed to the Prophet, but is rather a statement of al-Zuhri. For this reason, al-Hafiz said in al-Fath: “This addition is interpolated. Muslim made this clear in his narration through Yunus from al-Zuhri: he related the hadith, then said, ‘Al-Zuhri said.’ Al-Nasa’i likewise recorded it separately through the transmission of Yunus.”
