The other is the Prophet’s statement, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in another hadith: “For His cloak is majesty, and His waist-wrapper is might …” Aḥmad and others recorded it in a hadith narrated by Fuḍālah ibn ʿUbayd, which follows this one.
Note: Al-Mundhirī cited this hadith in al-Targhīb (4/16), through Muslim’s narration from Abū Saʿīd and Abū Hurayrah, with the wording: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: Allah, Exalted is He, says, “Might is My waist-wrapper, and majesty is My cloak …” This differs from what is in Muslim—and likewise in al-Bukhārī, as you can see. He then said: “Al-Barqānī also narrated it in his Mustakhraj, through the route recorded by Muslim, with the wording …” He then cited it with the wording he had attributed to Muslim, except that its full version has the wording of al-Bukhārī. Muslim’s wording is abridged: “Whoever contends with Me, I shall punish him.”
Al-Suyūṭī included it in al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr with al-Barqānī’s wording and attributed it to Samawayh. The hadith also has another chain from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, relating from his Lord, Exalted is He, who said: “Majesty is My cloak; whoever contends with Me for My cloak, I shall crush him.” Al-Ḥākim recorded it (1/61) through the route of Sahl ibn Bakkār: Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us from Qatādah, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab, from him. He said: “Authentic according to Muslim’s criteria.” Al-Dhahabī agreed with him, and it is as they said.
