The upright shaykh, Rashid al-Din Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Abī Bakr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān al-ʿĀmirī, informed us; the text was read to him while I listened in the year 669 AH. The transmitters just mentioned likewise conveyed it, with their chain back to al-Anṣārī, who said: Sulaymān al-Taymī narrated to me, and Anas ibn Mālik narrated to us:
Two men sneezed in the presence of the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him. He invoked a blessing for one of them but did not do so for the other.
People asked, “Messenger of Allah, two men sneezed before you, yet you invoked a blessing for one and not for the other?”
He replied, “This one praised Allah, so I blessed him; that one did not praise Allah, so I did not bless him.”
أَخْبَرَنَا الشَّيْخُ الْعَدْلُ رَشِيدُ الدِّينِ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ الْعَامِرِيُّ، قَرَأَهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَنَا أَسْمَعُ سَنَةَ ٦٦٩، وَالْمَذْكُورُونَ بِسَنَدِهِمْ إِلَى الْأَنْصَارِيِّ، حَدَّثَنِي التَّيْمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ،
قَالَ:
" عَطَسَ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلَانِ فَشَمَّتَ أَوْ فَسَمَّتَ أَحَدَهُمَا وَلَمْ يُشَمِّتِ الْآخَرَ، أَوْ فَسَمَّتَهُ وَلَمْ يُسَمِّتِ الْآخَرَ،
فَقِيلَ:
يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، عَطَسَ عِنْدَكَ رَجُلَانِ فَشَمَّتَّ أَحَدَهُمَا وَلَمْ تُشَمِّتِ الْآخَرَ؟ أَوْ فَسَمَّتَّهُ وَلَمْ تُسَمِّتِ الْآخَرَ،
فَقَالَ:
إِنَّ هَذَا حَمِدَ اللَّهَ فَشَمَّتُّهُ، وَإِنَّ هَذَا لَمْ يَحْمَدِ اللَّهَ فَلَمْ أُشَمِّتْهُ "
