that al-Rubayyiʿ, the daughter of al-Naḍr—his paternal aunt—had slapped a young girl and broken her tooth. The girl’s people first offered to accept the prescribed financial compensation, but they refused; then they asked the girl herself to pardon her, but she also refused. They therefore went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he ordered that retaliation be carried out. Her brother Anas ibn al-Naḍr came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, is the tooth of al-Rubayyiʿ going to be broken? By the One Who sent you with the truth, her tooth will not be broken!” He replied, “O Anas, the Book of Allah prescribes retaliation.” In the end the injured party forgave her, whereupon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Among Allah’s servants are those who, were they to swear by Allah, He would certainly honor their oath.”
