The eminent, well-authenticated authority, Najm al-Dīn Abū al-ʿIzz Yūsuf ibn Yaʿqūb ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Mujāwir al-Shaybānī—this report was read to him while I listened in Muharram of the year 680 AH—and Muslim ibn ʿAllān informed us, saying:
Abū al-Yaman Zayd ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Zayd al-Kindī, it having been read to him, informed us; Abū Manṣūr ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥammad ibn Zurayq al-Qazzāz al-Shaybānī informed us; the ḥadīth master Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn Thābit al-Khaṭīb informed us; Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Muʾaddib narrated to me; ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn al-Muthannā al-ʿAnbarī in Astazabād narrated to us; Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Saʿīd al-Jawharī al-Baghdādī in Arjān narrated to us; and al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah narrated to us.
Al-Khaṭīb added: Abū ʿUmar ibn Mahdī and a number of others likewise informed us, saying: Ismāʿīl ibn Muḥammad al-Ṣaffār informed us; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿArafah narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us; Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah narrated to us, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with them both—who said that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, declared:
“Neither a person in a state of major ritual impurity nor a menstruating woman may recite anything of the Quran.”
