Abū Isḥāq Ibrāhīm ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Yaḥyā ibn ʿAlawī ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Darajī al-Qurashī informed us—this was read to him while I was listening—in Rajab of the year 680 AH.
He told us that Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Naṣr ibn Abī al-Fatḥ al-Ṣaydalanī had authorized and related it to us; Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Ḥaddād conveyed it to us; Abū Nuʿaym Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq, the ḥāfiẓ, conveyed it to us; and Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar ibn Aḥmad ibn Fāris said:

“I heard Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah say:
ʿĀṣim narrated to us from Zirr, who said:

I came to Ṣafwān ibn ʿAssāl al-Murādī, and he asked me, ‘What has brought you here?’

I replied, ‘I have come seeking knowledge.’

He said, ‘The angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, pleased with what he is pursuing.
A doubt has arisen within me about wiping over the leather socks after defecation or urination. Have you heard anything about this from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?’

He answered, ‘Yes. When we were travelling he would instruct us not to remove our leather socks for three days and nights—except in the case of major ritual impurity (janābah). For defecation, urination, or sleep, however, we were permitted simply to wipe over them.’

I asked, ‘Have you heard him mention following one’s desires?’

He replied, ‘Yes. While we were on a journey with him, a Bedouin called out to him in a loud voice, saying, “O Muḥammad!”
He answered him in the same forceful tone, saying:’
