Shaykh al-Imām, the eminent authority Shams al-Dīn Abū al-Ghanāʾim al-Muslim ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Muslim ibn ʿAllān al-Qaysī read to us while I listened, in the year 680 AH, together with Abū al-Ḥasan ibn al-Bukhārī. They both said:
Abū al-Yaman Zayd ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Zayd al-Kindī read to us, saying: The judge Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Bāqī ibn Muḥammad al-Anṣārī informed us; Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Jawharī dictated to us; Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Ḥamdān ibn Mālik al-Qaṭīʿī narrated to us; Bishr ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘Fasting is Mine, and I alone give its reward. He gives up his desire, his food, and his drink for My sake. Fasting is a shield.
The one who fasts has two moments of joy: a joy when he breaks his fast, and a joy when he meets Allah, Mighty and Majestic. And the odor that issues from the mouth of a fasting person is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk.’”
