68 – Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil narrated to us: Jarir reported, from Husayn, from al-Shaʿbi, that he was once seated in the company of Ziyad when a man was brought before Ziyad on suspicion of murder. The man moved his lips with words we could not discern, and Ziyad immediately set him free. I asked the man, “What did you say?” He answered:
“O Allah, Lord of Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, and Jacob; Lord of Gabriel, Michael, and Israfil; Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the Mighty Furqan (the Qur’an), shield me from the evil of Ziyad.”
The evil of Ziyad was indeed turned away from him.
