42 – Mudlij ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz told me, on the authority of a Qurashī elder: “Gabriel, peace be upon him, descended to Jacob and said, ‘O Jacob, ingratiate yourself with your Lord.’ Jacob asked, ‘O Gabriel, what should I say?’ He replied, ‘Say: O Abundant in goodness, O Ever-Kind Benefactor.’ Then Allah revealed to Jacob: ‘You have called upon Me with a supplication that, had your two sons been dead, I would have restored them to life for you.’”
