38 – Al-Muthannā ibn ʿAbd al-Karīm narrated to us; Zāfir ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, from Yaḥyā ibn Sulaym: It reached him that the Angel of Death asked his Lord for permission to greet Jacob—peace be upon him. Permission was granted, so he came and greeted him. Jacob said to him, “By Him who created you, have you taken Joseph’s soul?” He replied, “No.” Jacob then said, “Shall I not teach you words that, ⦗51⦘ if you ask Allah for anything by them, He will grant it?” The Angel said, “Indeed.” Jacob said, “Say: ‘O Possessor of perpetual kindness that never ceases, a kindness none but You can ever enumerate.’” He (the narrator) said: Before daybreak had come, Joseph’s shirt was brought to Jacob, peace be upon them both.
