37 – Yūsuf ibn Mūsā narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā narrated to us, from Isrāʾīl, from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAmr ibn Maymūn, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd related to us in the public treasury, saying, “When the great fish swallowed Jonah, it plunged with him to the ocean floor. Jonah heard the pebbles glorifying God, so he cried out in the darknesses—three layers of darkness: the belly of the fish, the darkness of night, and the darkness of the sea—‘There is no deity except You; exalted are You! I was indeed among the wrongdoers’ (Q 21:87). Then, ‘We cast him onto the open shore while he was sick’ (Q 37:145). He lay there, Ibn Masʿūd said, ‘like a newly hatched chick that has been plucked bare, with no feathers on it.’”
