Al-Faraj ba'd al-ShiddaIbn Abi al-Dunya

Abu Sakhr said, “Ibn Qusayt informed me—while I was recounting this very report—that he had heard Abu Hurayrah say: ‘He was cast onto the open shore, and Allah caused a yaqtīn (gourd vine) to spring up over him.’ We asked, ‘Abu Hurayrah, what is the yaqtīn?’ He replied, ‘It is the dubbaʾ, the gourd plant.’ Abu Hurayrah continued: ‘Allah also prepared for him a wild she-goat that grazed on the earth’s vegetation; it would stand astride him and satisfy him with its milk every evening and morning until he regained his strength.’

Regarding this, before Islam, Umayyah ibn Abī al-Ṣalt composed a line of poetry:

He caused a gourd to grow above him in mercy;
Had it not been for Allah, he would have lain exposed and forlorn.”
