93 – Sulaymān related to me; he said: Ibn Abī Khayrah narrated to me, from Abū al-Habḥāb, who said: Khāzim, the freedman of ʿUmar b. Hubayra, told me:
“I was with ʿUmar b. Hubayra when he escaped from prison. We reached Damascus late in the night. He went straight to Maslama b. ʿAbd al-Malik, who placed him under his protection and lodged him in his own house.
Maslama then performed the dawn prayer behind Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik. When the prayer was over, Maslama asked permission to enter upon him, and, once admitted, Hishām said to him:
‘O Abū Saʿīd, I imagine Ibn Hubayra must have come to you during the night?’
He replied, ‘Indeed, Commander of the Believers; I have granted him asylum—so bestow him upon me.’
Hishām said, ‘He is yours.’”
