90 – Sulaymān b. Abī Shaykh told me; Sulaymān b. Ziyād told me: ʿUmar b. Hubayra was governor of Iraq, an office to which Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik had appointed him. When Yazīd died and Hishām took the caliphate, ʿUmar b. Hubayra remarked, “Hishām will put one of two men in charge of Iraq: Saʿīd al-Ḥarashī or Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī. Should he give it to Khālid—the son of that Christian woman—calamity will follow.”

Hishām did in fact appoint Khālid over Iraq. Khālid entered Wāsiṭ just as ʿUmar b. Hubayra had been called to the prayer and was getting ready: he had already wrapped his turban, a mirror in hand as he adjusted it, when someone said to him, “Khālid has just arrived.” ʿUmar b. Hubayra responded, “This is exactly how the Hour will come—suddenly.”

Khālid came in, seized ʿUmar b. Hubayra, shackled him, and dressed him in a woolen coat ⦗85⦘. ʿUmar then said to Khālid, “What an evil precedent you have set for the people of Iraq! Do you not fear that a similar summons may one day be made against you?”
