Abu Bakr said: Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān recited to me:
Is not the span of life but an hour, soon to depart,
with all its hardship and ease alike?
So calm yourself: give no heed to a passing grief
nor to a sudden joy—for both will surely pass.
قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ: أَنْشَدَنِي الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ:

هَلِ الدَّهْرُ إِلَّا سَاعَةً ثُمَّ تَنْقَضِي ... بِمَا كَانَ فِيهَا مِنْ عَنَاءٍ وَمِنْ خَفْضِ
فَهَوْنَكَ لَا تَحْفَلْ مَسَاءَةَ عَارِضٍ ... وَلَا فَرْحَةً سَرَتْ فَكِلْتَاهُمَا تَمْضِي
