Al-Ju'Ibn Abi al-Dunya
  1. Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil narrated to us, saying: Abu Muʿawiyah related to us, from ⦗62⦘ al-Aʿmash, from Nafiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar: He once fell ill, so Safiyyah sent a servant-girl who bought him a cluster of grapes for one dirham. A beggar saw her and followed her; when the girl entered the house he cried, “The poor man, the poor man!” Ibn ʿUmar said, “Give it to him, give it to him.” Safiyyah then sent another dirham, and the servant bought him a second cluster for a dirham. A beggar saw her, followed her, and when she entered he called out, “The poor man, the poor man!” Ibn ʿUmar said, “Give it to him.” She sent yet another dirham, at which Safiyyah said, “By Allah, if you do that again you will never receive any good from me ever!” The beggar then desisted, and she bought him a cluster of grapes.
