52. Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Abi Hatim narrated to me; he said: ʿAttab ibn Ziyad narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us; he said: Ibn Lahiʿa narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Nawfal al-Asadi, that Safiyyah bint Abi ʿUbayd said:

“I never once saw him eat to satiety so that I could say, ‘He is full’—meaning Ibn ʿUmar. When I noticed this—and he was caring for two orphans—I prepared a dish for him. He summoned the two, and they ate with him. After they had gone, I brought him some more food, and he said, ‘Call so-and-so and so-and-so.’ I replied, ‘They have already gone to sleep, and I have made sure they have eaten their fill.’ He said, ‘Then invite some of the ahl al-ṣuffah.’ So a number of poor folk were brought in, and they ate with him.”
