- Yaʿqūb ibn ʿUbayd narrated to me; he said, “Yazīd ibn Hārūn informed me; he said, ‘al-Jarrāḥ ibn al-Minhāl al-Jazarī informed us, from al-Zuhrī, from a man, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said:
I went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, until he entered one of the orchards of the Anṣār. He began picking up pieces of fruit and eating them, and he said, “O Ibn ʿUmar, why are you not eating?” I replied, “O Messenger of Allah, I do not crave it.” He said, “But I do crave it, and this is the fourth morning since I last tasted food and have found none. If I wished, I could supplicate my Lord and He would grant me possessions like those of Khosrow and Caesar. What will you do, O Ibn ʿUmar, when you remain among people who store away the provision of an entire year?”
He continued: By Allah, we had not yet moved on before the verse was revealed, “And how many a creature does not carry its own provision; Allah provides for it and for you, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing” (al-ʿAnkabūt 29:60). ⦗184⦘
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then said, “Allah, exalted is He, does not command me to hoard worldly wealth or to follow base desires. Whoever lays up worldly goods hoping thereby for lasting life should know that life is in Allah’s hand. Indeed, I do not hoard dinars or dirhams, nor do I set aside provision for tomorrow.”
