300 – Abū Saʿīd narrated to me; he said: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Karīm related to us, from Ḥammād b. Abī Ḥanīfa, who said: I entered upon Dāwūd al-Tāʾī while he was dressed in ragged, patched garments. I heard him say, “You craved walnuts, so I gave them to you; then you craved walnuts and dates. I have sworn that you shall never eat them again.” He (Ḥammād) continued: I greeted him and went in, and there he was—alone, rebuking his own soul.
