299 – Abū Saʿīd al-Ashajj narrated to me; he said: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Karīm b. Ḥassān related to us, from Ḥammād b. Abī Ḥanīfa, ⦗179⦘ that Dāwūd al-Tāʾī was looked after by a woman. She once said to him, “Shall I prepare a rich, fatty dish for you to eat?” He replied, “I would like that.” She cooked the dish and brought it to him. He then asked her, “How are the orphans of such-and-such a family?” She answered, “They are as they have always been.” He said, “Take it to them.”

She pleaded, “May I be your ransom! You have not eaten any relish for such a long time!” He responded, “If they eat it, it will be stored up for us with Allah; but if I eat it, it will end up in the latrine.”
