Al-Ju'Ibn Abi al-Dunya

297 – Ibn Abi Maryam related to me, from Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz, who said: My mother told me: Your father once said to me, “I long for some milk with thick bread.” So I prepared it for his breaking of the fast and set it before him. Just then a beggar was calling out, “Who will lend to the One who is bountiful and sure to repay?” Your father answered, “His destitute servant who is bereft of good deeds.” He then took the bowl, went outside, and gave it—bread, milk, and all—to the beggar, and he spent the night hungry. In the pre-dawn hours I said to him, “Shall I bring you a scrap of bread to steady your back for tomorrow?” He replied, “No; I feel no need for it.”
