Al-Ju'Ibn Abi al-Dunya
  1. Ibn Abī Maryam related to me, from Ḥajjāj ibn Nuṣayr, who said: al-Munḏir Abū Yaḥyā narrated to us:
“I once saw Mālik ibn Dīnār carrying a cooked shank. He kept lifting it to his nose, smelling it from time to time. As he walked on he passed an elderly man who was sorely afflicted, so he handed the shank to him, wiped his hand on a wall, pulled his cloak over his head, and continued on his way.

Later I met one of his close friends and said, ‘Today I witnessed something astonishing from Abū Yaḥyā.’
‘What was it?’ he asked.
I told him the story. He replied, ‘Let me explain: he had been craving that shank for a very long time, yet he could not bring himself to eat it, so he gave it away as charity.’”
