36 – ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yūnus ibn Bukayr related to us; he said: My father related to me; he said: al-Ḥasan ibn Dīnār related to us, from al-Ḥasan, from al-Aḥnaf ibn Qays, who said:
We set out with Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī as a delegation to ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb. ʿUmar owned three loaves of bread: one day he would eat them with milk and clarified butter, another day with tender meat, and another day with oil. The company began to eat while offering excuses, so ʿUmar said, “I can see your apologies, yet I know better than you how to live well. Had I wished, I could have laid out karākir (choice fatty cuts), camel humps, ṣilāʾ (roasted joints), ṣināb (a seasoned sauce), and salāʾiq (delicacies), but I am saving my good deeds. Allah—exalted is His praise—has spoken of some people, saying: ‘You have exhausted your good things during your worldly life and enjoyed them’ (Al-Aḥqāf 46:20).”
