274 – ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm al-Yashkurī narrated to us; he said: Yaʿqūb ibn Muḥammad al-Zuhrī narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd al-Muhaymin ibn ʿAbbās narrated to us; he said: Abū Ḥāzim said:

“I returned after the ʿAsr prayer to visit Sahl ibn Saʿid—he was fasting. When nightfall came I said to his servant, ‘Bring the food with which he may break his fast.’

“The servant replied, ‘…’

“I said, ‘Then at least some dates?’

“He answered, ‘Not even dates.’

“So I began to scold him, saying, ‘You have neglected an elder from among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ!’

“He responded, ‘And what is my fault? Today he opened his storehouse and left in it neither a single grain of wheat nor a grain of barley without first distributing it.’”
