266 – Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿīd al-Jawharī narrated to me; he said: Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; he said: Sulaymān ibn Qarm narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Shaqīq, who said:
I and a companion of mine visited Salmān. He set before us some bread and salt and then said, “Had not the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidden us from affectation, we would have prepared something finer for you.” My companion remarked, “If only our salt had a little thyme!” So Salmān sent a miṭhara (ablution jug) to the grocer, pawned it, and returned with some thyme.
