264 – Muhammad ibn Idrīs narrated to us; he said: Zuhayr ibn ʿAbbād narrated to us; he said: ʿAṭāʾ ibn Muslim narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, who said: Saʿīd ibn Jubayr told me, “I prepared for Ibn ʿAbbās and his companions a variety of dishes and some khabīs (a sweet paste). He said to me, ‘Saʿīd, we are a people of genuine Arab taste, so instead of these assorted dishes make for us tharīd (crumbled bread soaked in broth), and in place of these sweets make ḥays (dates mixed with clarified butter). Were you not one of us—of the household—I would not have spoken to you about it.’”
